Don’t you hate when your favourite shirt gets ruined by one of those impossible to shift stains? Whether it’s grass, wine or mud - we’ve all been there.

Follow these simple steps to get rid of these super annoying common stains.

 

#1. Ink

What You’ll Need:

Paper Towel

Laundry Detergent

 

Put a paper towel inside the garment. Take a fresh paper towel and blot excess ink. Cover the stain with laundry detergent and leave for five minutes. Stick in a hot wash.

 

#2. Coffee 

What You’ll Need:

Laundry Detergent

Baking Soda

White Vinegar

Toothbrush

 

Flush the stain with cold water. Cover with detergent and leave to soak, rubbing every few minutes. Meanwhile, mix together baking soda and vinegar to form a paste. After 20 minutes, apply to the stain with a clean toothbrush. Rinse and then wash as normal.

 

#3. Ketchup

What You’ll Need:

Detergent

Paper Towel/Clean Cloth

White Vinegar

Stain Remover

 

Flush the garment with cool water. Cover the stain with detergent and leave for 10 minutes. Rinse. Dab the stain with a paper towel dipped in vinegar. Rinse again. If needed, repeat the process until the stain is gone. Add stain remover and wash as normal.

 

#4. Mustard 

What You’ll Need:

White Vinegar

Washing Up Liquid

 

Soak the stain in vinegar. Cover with washing up liquid and rub gently until the stain is gone. Wash as normal.

 

#5. Food Grease 

What You’ll Need:

Talcum Powder

Washing Up Liquid

 

Sprinkle talc on the stain until most of the grease is absorbed. Brush the residue off with a clean cloth. If the spot remains, gently rub washing up liquid into the stain until it lifts. Wash as usual.

 

#6. Sweat 

What You’ll Need:

Stain Remover

White Vinegar

Lemons

 

Pretreat the stain with stain remover. Mix together one part vinegar to two parts water. Rub the mixture into the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing with cold water. You can also try rubbing lemon juice into the stain before washing!

 

#7. Grass

What You’ll Need:

White Vinegar

Laundry Detergent

Toothbrush

Cloth

 

Mix together one part vinegar to two parts water. Soak the stain in the mixture for 15 minutes before removing and leaving to sit for another five minutes. Using a clean cloth, dab with laundry detergent. Rub the detergent into the stain gently with a clean toothbrush. Wait for five minutes before washing on a cool wash.

 

#8. Lipstick 

What You’ll Need:

Rubbing Alcohol

Clean Cloth

 

Dip a clean cloth in rubbing alcohol and gently blot the stain. Rinse through with cold water, before popping in the wash.

 

#9. Fruit Juice 

What You’ll Need:

Laundry Detergent

White Vinegar

 

Use cool water to flush the stain. Set aside. Mix laundry detergent with vinegar and water. Soak the stain for 15 minutes. Then rinse the stain before adding the garment to a hot wash.

 

#10. Chocolate 

What You’ll Need:

Plastic Knife

Laundry Detergent/Washing Up Liquid

 

Using a plastic knife, scrape off any excess chocolate from the stain. Next, rub the detergent or washing up liquid into the stain and soak for 30 minutes. Rub occasionally. After 30 minutes, pop into the wash.

 

#11. Mud 

What You’ll Need:

Plastic Knife

Washing Up Liquid

 

Similar to chocolate stains, scrape off any excess mud using a plastic knife. Then, mix washing up liquid with some warm water and apply to the stain, rubbing gently. Using a damp cloth, blot away any soap residue. Repeat until the stain disappears. Wash as normal.

 

#12. Ice Cream 

What You’ll Need:

Pre Wash Stain Remover

Laundry Detergent

 

Rinse the stain with cool water. Then, apply a pre wash stain remover to the stain. Soak the stain in cool water, adding a few drops of laundry detergent. Rub gently. Wash as usual.

 

#13. Blood

 

 

What You’ll Need:

Cold Water

 

Cold water is the way to remove blood stains. Rinse the garment through with cold water. If the blood is dried, pre soak it in a basin of cold water, rubbing occasionally. Then, wash as usual.

 

TOP TIP: When rubbing a stain, always work from outside of the stain inwards to prevent it from spreading.

 

#14. Red Wine 

What You’ll Need:

Baking Soda

White Wine

Clean Cloth x 2

 

Nope, it’s not a myth. White wine really works!

 

First, blot the stain with a clean, damp cloth. Then, take a fresh cloth and dampen with white wine. Use the cloth to apply the white wine onto the red wine stain. Blot the stain gently. Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Blot with a cloth to remove the baking soda. Wash as normal.

 

#15. White Wine 

What You’ll Need:

Washing Up Liquid

Clean Cloth

 

Dab the stain with some cool water and a little washing up liquid. After a minute or two, rinse the stain with a clean damp cloth.

 

#16. Beer 

What You’ll Need:

White Vinegar

Clean Cloth

 

To start, you’ll need to soak the stain in cool water, with a ¼ cup of white vinegar mixed in. After 5 minutes, use a clean cloth to sponge away the stain. Wash as normal afterwards.

 

#17. Marker Pen 

What You’ll Need:

White Vinegar

Clean Cloth x 2

Laundry Detergent

 

Soak a clean cloth in white vinegar and carefully blot the stain. Do not rub! Lay it on a flat surface and leave it for around 15 minutes to dry. Next, dip the cloth into some laundry detergent and press it firmly to the stain, holding it for a few seconds. Do this a few more times. Leave for a further 15 minutes, before taking a clean cloth and soaking up any excess liquid. Wet the cloth in warm water and gently blot the stain to rinse out any remaining residue.

 

#18. Soy Sauce 

What You’ll Need:

Clean Cloth

Laundry Detergent

Pre Wash Stain Remover

(Bleaching Agent - for white clothes only)

 

First, blot the stain with a clean cloth to remove any excess liquid. Flush the stain with cold water. Then, gently rub detergent into the stain and let sit for a few minutes. Rinse again, apply detergent and leave to soak in warm water for 30 minutes. Apply a pre wash stain remover and then add the garment to a hot wash.

*If the stain is on white fabric, you can use a bleaching agent to help remove the stain. If you don’t have any to hand, white vinegar or lemon juice can work just as well!

 

TOP TIP: When flushing stains with water, always flush through the back of the garment, rather than through the front as this will cause the stain to sink further into the fabric.

 

#19. Makeup

What You’ll Need:

Shaving Foam

White Vinegar

Clean Cloth

Laundry Detergent

Empty spray bottle

 

For foundation stains:

Cover the stain in shaving foam and let sit for a few minutes. Rub the stain and then rinse it with cold water. Repeat the process until the stain is gone, then rinse with warm water.

 

For mascara stains:

Dampen a clean cloth with white vinegar. Use it to blot the mascara stain. Mix lukewarm water and some laundry detergent into an empty spray bottle and spray the stain, blot, then spray again. Leave for one hour. Wash as normal.

 

#20. Grease (Car/Bike) 

What You’ll Need:

Washing Up Liquid

 

Rub washing up liquid into the stain and leave to soak for 20 minutes. Rinse through with cold water, then wash as usual.
